Evaluation of the California Mastitis Test as a precalving treatment tool for Holstein heifers

Efficacy of precalving intramammary treatment of heifers with antimicrobials can vary among herds and risks for antimicrobial residues exists. California Mastitis testing (CMT), milk electrical conductivity and bacterial culture were used to evaluate milk samples 428 dairy heifers precalving (average: 7 days precalving) for intramammary infection. CMT and electrical conductivity were not good tools to correctly identify quarters infected by any pathogen and positive predictive value was low. Negative predictive value, however, was quite high (95-95%) so these tests may have value in identifying heifers and quarters that do not need to be treated precalving.
